While the world shut down, people in the community still needed help. Footprints continued to support people returning to or living in the community in contact with the Criminal Justice System during the pandemic, helping to build stronger, safer communities despite the uncertainty and fear of the time.

When Nolan was 21, he was arrested and sentenced for a serious crime. He remained in prison for 23 years. He missed the computer and smartphone revolution, but nevertheless developed an ambition to become a cartoon animator. He had serious health and insecurity issues, which he avoided dealing with. He was quiet and would not engage. Due to Covid restrictions, he was limited to phone meetings, which he particularly resisted.
When the lockdown was lifted, and it was safe to do so, we began meeting Nolan in person. He developed a good relationship with his mentor, who started helping him address his issues. His mentor encouraged Nolan to re-establish contact with one of his sisters and a cousin, and supported him when his time in a supported hostel was coming to an end, and he needed to find new accommodation. Nolan’s mentor encouraged him to engage with the process, and he found an affordable flat in Winton. His mentor then helped him get a bed with a MacDougall grant and look for other key items in the shops. His mentor also supported him in beginning the process to receive medical attention for his issues.
Nolan’s confidence has grown greatly, and he started casual work delivering leaflets before he got a part-time job as a hotel waiter. His mentor helped him overcome his fear of disclosing his criminal deed. He had been working part-time for some months, and his benefits had been reduced. He has matured, growing resilient, respectful and reliable, while his sense of humour has returned completely. He has undertaken various online animation training courses. He is saving up to get the powerful PC which he needs to begin more professional animation qualifications.
