Life Works:

Bert's Story

Bert came to Life Works as a participant in 2018, to give him a focus and improve his well-being. Having a Level 3 qualification in woodwork he helped other participants make wooden Christmas trees and decorations.

In February 2019, following a grant from The Clothworkers Foundation, we were able to offer Bert the chance to lead our first woodwork course in Poole, seeing 6 participants gaining joinery skills and making wooden boxes.

In March we set up a woodwork basement in the Grange Approved Premise in Waterlooville, Hampshire, supported by a grant from The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation. The workshop has been in operation for 12 weeks, led by Bert and has supported up to 6 people a week.

I have really enjoyed the experience and think that the clients got a great deal of knowledge in 12 weeks. I learnt new teaching skills which I hope to be able to put towards future projects. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead this course.

In September Bert intends to retrain as a motor mechanic, but will continue to lead on our woodwork programme in his spare time, delivering support for residents in St Anne's Mental Health Hospital, Dorset.
